1st Summer Signing - Gavin Close

Rhydyfelin RFC are delighted to announce the signing of winger Gavin Close who returns having spent 2 seasons away from the club.

Gavin has spent the last 2 seasons as backs coach at Taffs Well RFC, overseing their run to the Principality Stadium and winning a league title.

Closey broke in to our 1st team back in 2005/05 having come through the youth system at The Village.  In the first 2 seasons Closey scored 62 tries (30 and 32) which put him on the radar of Premiership clubs.  A move to Pontypridd followed, however a preseason injury set back meant a spell on the sidelines for the 2007/08 season before the long road back to fitness.

A return to the black and red in 2008/09 followed, where the try scoring continued as Gavin started to rebuild his confidence.  Although the likes of Premiership Bedwas etc came calling Closey remained with us up to the end of 2014/15 where he was yet again top try scorer.

In the 9 full seasons with the 1st XV, Closey has been top try scorer in 7 seasons, scoring a staggering 172 tries (an average of over 19 a season).

Gavin will add experience and competition to the back line, no doubt looking to regain his place in the 1st XV ready for the challenge of the Championship in the coming season.

Welcome back Gav, it's great to have you back where you belong!
