Nant Conwy Rugby Football Club are from the upper reaches of the Conwy Valley in North Wales. The club’s grounds are located on the B5106 between the town of Llanrwst and the village of Trefriw. They presently play in the Welsh Rugby Union Division One North League. Nant Conwy has a short history, having been established only in 1980, playing their home games at Pant Carw. In 2007 the club successfully applied for funding to install floodlights at their ground, and in 2011 the club opened a new, extended clubhouse. Nant Conwy goes by the nickname Teirw (Bulls) and play under the motto ‘Hwn yw tir nerth Teirw Nant’. 2016-17 WRU Plate: After a bye in round one of this seasons competition Nant Conwy have welcomed sides from Gwent and Bridgend to Pant Carw in subsequent rounds. A comprehensive 43 – 19 win over division 2 east side Pontypool United was rewarded with a home tie against Maesteg Quins of division 1 west central in round 3. The Bulls recorded another victory and a shut out of their opponents 1ith a 10-0 victory to secure their place in round 4.
2016-17 Results: The season kicked off with arguably the biggest game of the season on day 1, as last season’s top 2 clashed at Pant Carw. The visitors, Pwllheli, claimed the victory by 24-37 however Nant Conwy hasn’t looked back since. In their first game on the road the Bulls put 99 points on struggling Abergele (6-99) before returning home to beat Mold by 83-7. Two tough wins away at Llandudno, 15-28, and at home versus former title rivals Caernarfon by 26-8, kept them on the coat tails of Pwllheli at the top of div 1 north. Resounding wins on the road at Bethesda and Ruthin, 0-57 and 5-55 respectively, maintained the strong run of form from the Bulls and a 80-7 win over COBRA kept the club statistician’s pencil well and truly sharpened. Another big win away at Colwyn Bay (0-43) along with a more modest victory at home against Bala (31-16) before the hammering of Bro Festiniog (54-7), has kept the ball rolling on to today’s encounter. CURRENT RECORD: Played 11 Won 10 Lost 1 Points for 580 against 108 Tries for 90 against 13 Points 51 (top 3 points above unbeaten Pwllheli who have a game in hand) LAST DECADE: In the final years of the old division 4 north days Nant Conwy secured a 3rd place finish in 2007-08 before going on to win the title the following season. The most dramatic of ends to the season resulted in Nant Conwy/Caernarfon and Ruthin all finishing on 89 points, with Nant Conwy claiming the title.
After the creation of the ‘new’ Division 1 North, Nant Conwy went from strength to strength securing their status as one of the top clubs in north Wales. Another championship winning season came in 2009-10 as the Bulls snatched the title yet again from Caernarfon’s grasp, finishing just 1 point above their rivals. It was Caernarfon’s turn to rule the roost for the next couple of seasons however Nant Conwy remained on their tails with successive 2nd place finishes in 2010-11 and 2011-12. In addition to finishing 2nd in the league a visit to the Millennium stadium came in 11/12 however they suffered defeat in the final at the hands of Penallta.
A 3rd title in 6 seasons was secured in 2012-13, this time beating Pwllheli to the title by a single victory (4 points). The ‘new’ rivalry between the sides has continued since with Pwllheli twice snatching the title from the grasp of the Bulls, winning the title in both 2014-15 and 2016-17.
This season looks set to be a two horse race once again with only a single win between the sides yet again, when Pwllheli triumphed at Pant Carw back on the opening day of the season. CLUB HONOURS:
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 1 – Nant Conwy 1 Rhydyfelin 0 Nant Conwy v Rhydyfelin Konica Minolta Cup round 4 January 14th 2006 Rhydyfelin travelled to North Wales looking to make club history by reaching the 5th round for the first time ever. However it was the home side that made the history by becoming the first side from North Wales to reach round 5 of the Welsh cup. Nant Conwy had already beaten 3 sides of higher league standing at home in previous rounds, and Rhydyfelin went the same way. In a slightly dull first half both sides cancelled each other out and only the boot of Scott Perry made a mark on the score board. Conwy and Rhydyfelin had lengthy spells of possession but neither side could make the telling break. Half time - Nant Conwy 0 Rhydyfelin 6 The home side came out for the second half much the brighter side as the crowd began to rally behind their team. An early penalty for Conwy however was quickly pegged back as Rhydyfelin restored the 6 point lead. Conwy tried in vain for lengthy periods in Rhydyfelin’s 22metres but couldn’t break the solid Rhyd’ defence, until they got a helping hand. A Conwy scrum out wide near the corner flag collapsed and the referee, without warning, awarded a penalty try to the home side. With the kick in front of the posts Nant took a one point lead. Rhyd’ immediately upped their game and won a number of penalties in the opposition half, but failed to land the vital penalty and allowed Conwy to hold on for a famous victory up North.
