Squad Update/Injury Report

The treatment table is constantly occupied at the moment with a number of injuries, short and long term.

This week’s 1st team squad travelling to Maesteg Quins is without two regulars, Rhys Phillips and Luke Studley as both have picked up arm injuries and will sit out this weekend’s Championship fixture. Lewis Smith is also missing due to work commitments.

The 2nds don’t have a fixture this weekend, with no league game we’ve taken a chance to rest a few bodies plus with others unavailable due to work/family commitments we are a little thin on the ground. We are hoping to get a midweek fixture next week, keep an eye on social media for news of any fixtures.

Aaron Harris and Chay Laskey both remain unavailable with wrist injuries, while Sean Sullivan (Sid) is hoping to return soon from a recent shoulder injury. Th last league game away at Tylorstown resulted in an ankle injury for prop Dan Breeze, while Liam Griffiths only lasted a first few minutes of the game having to leave the field with a dislocated shoulder. Exciting young prospect Chad Davies is also looking at a lengthy lay off after recently dislocating his knee. Meanwhile, Martyn Wallace’s leg injury against Narberth is improving, having had physio this week he’ll hopefully be back in contention soon.

On our longer term absentees, Adam Baker is going back under the knife in January with a target of making preseason training. No such luck for Levi Knowles who’s still awaiting a date for his operation before being able to pencil in a return date. On more positive news, winger Dale Llewelyn is in the final recovery period after his operation and is looking to be back training around Christmas time.

While the injuries are mounting up, a few new and old faces are also returning with the news that Josh Hawkins has this week re-signed from Pontypridd RFC. Josh has had limited opportunities in the premiership this season and has been with us for a couple of our championship games to date. Having Josh around on a more permanent basis will no doubt boost morale and improve our options in the forwards. Also returning to the pack this week is Corey Bushell who’s been unavailable for the majority of the season so far, again Corey’s presence can only improve the squad. Another re-signing that was rubber stamped this week sees winger/full back Rhys Tovey re-joining the club from Cilfynydd RFC. Rhys left over the summer in search of first team rugby however has had a change of heart and decided to return eager to prove a point and secure a place in the 1st team squad.

There have been questions regarding the return of Jordan Rees from Bedwas, however having not yet been given a run of games in order to stake a claim for a regular spot on the wing Jordan will remain with the Premiership side. As always, should Jordan not be involved in their match day squads he’ll be back in the red and black turning out for ‘The Village’. As much as we would like to see him back, we all know the potential Jordan possesses and hope he can force his way into the starting XV and prove he has the ability to perform at the highest level.

Finally the club are also in the process of signing university student Josh Sharp. Josh is originally from Norwich and plays scrum half/outside half for his local side Thetford RFC. As well as playing Josh is a level two coach and referee, as well as currently studying for a degree in Rugby Coaching and Performance at USW.
